It is with great sadness that I am writing to inform you of the passing of Gary M Glazer, MD on October 16, 2011 after a long battle with prostate cancer.
Gary was a caring physician, a dedicated teacher, and an exemplary leader. As chairman of our department from 1989-2011, Gary guided Stanford Radiology with his inspiring and visionary leadership. He was creative, compassionate, and had an exceptional ability to predict important new directions in our field, a true luminary. Guided by his vision, strong moral compass and determination, he worked selflessly and tirelessly to build exceptional programs in clinical care, education, and research by recruiting excellent people and securing the resources needed to allow Stanford Radiology to thrive. He motivated us to strive for excellence, by words and by example, and successfully helped to transform our program into one of the pre-eminent radiology departments in the world. He was an insightful and innovative leader who supported his colleagues and had the
unique ability to instill belief in those around him that they could each rise up and achieve greatness. Under his guidance, Stanford educated the next generation of leaders, provided exceptional patient care and brought Radiology into new areas of investigation that will impact the field for years to come. His contributions to the Department, the Medical School and indeed the entire University are inspiring. We hold tremendous affection and gratitude for him as a Department leader, mentor and friend.
His passion for radiology was only surpassed by the incredible devotion and
love he held for his family. We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Glazer family.
