International Day of Radiology 2018 to focus on cardiac imaging
Monday, September 17, 2018 (ESR, Vienna) – The International Day of Radiology (IDoR) will be celebrated for the seventh time on November 8, this year focusing on cardiac imaging.
Cardiac imaging is a fast-growing subspecialty of diagnostic radiology that plays a huge part in the assessment and management of heart patients throughout the world. Cardiac radiologists – the experts in charge – supervise or perform imaging examinations, using technology such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and then interpret the resulting images to diagnose and monitor a wide range of diseases of the heart.
For IDoR 2018, we are highlighting the increasingly important role of radiologists in cardiac care, contributing to the diagnosis, pre-procedural work-up and follow-up of patients with a wide variety of cardiac pathology, from coronary artery disease and leaky heart valves to defects in the size and shape of the heart.
To underline the significance of cardiac imaging in various regions of the world and to show its current place in today’s medical healthcare spectrum, the ESR has conducted numerous interviews with experts throughout Europe, Latin America and Asia, as well as with individuals from Canada, South Africa and Egypt.
The stunning IDoR 2018 poster can again be downloaded on the IDoR website; this year it is available in 30 languages, covering a great variety from Icelandic to Nepalese.
A publication on this year’s main theme is currently in the making; books from previous years on emergency radiology, breast imaging, paediatric imaging, brain imaging and thoracic imaging are still available for download on the IDoR website.
As in previous years, more than 160 radiology-related professional societies from around the world will participate in the International Day of Radiology, holding a range of different events to celebrate, such as public lectures, department open days, conferences, and press events.
The International Day of Radiology was launched in 2012 and is a joint initiative of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR). It is an annual event held with the aim of building greater awareness of the value that radiology contributes to safe patient care, and improving understanding of the vital role radiologists play in the healthcare continuum.
November 8, the day that Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of x-rays in 1895, was chosen as a day of action and awareness. The organisers hope to alert the world to the stunning medical, scientific and even artistic possibilities of medical imaging, the essential role of the radiologist as a part of the healthcare team in countless medical scenarios, and the high educational and professional standards required of all staff working in medical imaging.

International Day of Radiology 2017 to focus on emergency radiology
Monday, October 2, 2017 (ESR, Vienna) – The International Day of Radiology (IDoR) will be celebrated for the sixth time on November 8, this year focusing on emergency radiology.
As in previous years, more than 150 radiology-related professional societies from around the world will participate in the International Day of Radiology, holding a range of different events to celebrate, such as public lectures, department open days, national media appearances, and press events. Following on from recent themes such as paediatric imaging and breast imaging, this year the focus will be on radiology in emergency settings.
Emergency radiology is quite young as a subspecialty within the imaging field, but it has gained enormous significance in recent years. Emergencies constitute a substantial portion of radiological cases and require efficient, effective handling with correct diagnoses and decisions in a timely manner. In the majority of hospitals today, radiologists are integral members of the emergency unit, and are in charge of sequencing, prioritisation and management of imaging services. Wherever this is the case, the outcome is impressive; not only is trauma imaging improved, with resulting lower morbidity and mortality, but all emergency patients benefit from the closer relationship between radiologists and the emergency department team. IDoR 2017 highlights this essential role that radiologists play in the emergency room, increasing the quality of care and treatment of patients.
To underline the significance of emergency radiology in various regions of the world and to show its current place in today’s medical healthcare spectrum, the ESR has conducted numerous interviews with experts from throughout Europe, Latin America and the United States.

Dear all,
As you may all be aware, the 2nd International Day of Radiology is fast approaching and will be celebrated on November 8, 2013. I would like to give you all a short summary on the progress so far.
This year 110 radiological and related societies are celebrating IDoR, which means an increase of 37.5 percent. We are especially happy that:
· For the first time all European Subspecialty & Allied Sciences Societies are taking part
·In South America 12 societies have joined in the IDoR celebrations
·In Asia there are 9 participating societies
·Patient organisations are for the first time supporting IDoR
We have produced a second volume of the very popular The Story of Radiology in cooperation with the International Society for the History of Radiology (ISHRAD). This volume highlights early radiation protection, the history of CT, as well as the work of William Coolidge and Gustav Bucky.
In addition, we have created a beautiful book on thoracic imaging in cooperation with the European Society of Thoracic Imaging (ESTI): Breathe easy: how radiology helps to find and fight lung diseases. Prof. Cornelia Schaefer-Prokop is Executive Editor and she has assembled the crème de la crème of specialists to contribute to this book. This publication also marks another first in IDoR history; European patient organisations were also involved in its creation and we are delighted with this new collaboration, which reflects the ESR’s increasing role in working for the benefit of the public.

For the main theme of this year’s IDoR, namely thoracic imaging, we have also created a few videos, where experts in this discipline describe the significance of imaging in the detection and treatment of lung diseases, as well as the importance of an international initiative such as IDoR for raising awareness of the discipline and the people that constitute its success.
Just like last year, social media activities are again supporting the International Day of Radiology, with thousands of people spreading the word within the radiological community.

ドイツの物 理学者ヴィルヘルム・レントゲン博士がエックス線を発見したのが1895年(明治28年)11月8日であり、今年で118年を迎えます。レントゲン博士に より発見されたエックス線は、医学史の中でも最大の発見といわれており、輝かしい放射線医学の歴史はここから始まりました。
昨年と同様 に、ESR、ACR、RSNAの提唱で、11月8日を「International Day of Radiology (IDoR)」として国際的に祝賀するべく呼びかけがあり、日本医学放射線学会としてもこの企画に賛同し参画することに致しました。昨年は、世界中から 80以上の学会の参加がありました。
日本医学放 射線学会としては、ホームページ等で会員にお知らせして、11月8日を会員の皆さんと共にお祝いするとともに、来年4月開催の日本医学放射線学会総会の会 長を務められる金澤 右先生（岡山大学）にお願いして記念の座談会を企画して頂き、その座談会記事を11月8日に発行される山陽新聞に掲載し、放射線医学 の重要性を広くアピールする予定です。

After its enormous success last year the International Day of Radiology (IDoR) will again be celebrated on November 8 and we would like to invite the 'Japan Radiological Society' to be part of this important initiative again.
As you know, the International Day of Radiology is an initiative of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). In 2012 more than 80 societies from all five continents took part, providing information on the IDoR on their websites and distributing it to their members. Some of these societies even chose to celebrate the IDoR with various activities, such as symposia, special lectures, dedicated meetings, round table discussions, open days at hospitals, and press conferences.
For the IDoR 2013 it was decided to have Thoracic Imaging as the main theme. The ESR Office has conducted numerous interviews with thoracic imaging experts from all over the world and has entered a cooperation with the European Society of Thoracic Imaging (ESTI) for a very ambitious project.
Together with ESTI we have created a book focusing on the role of imaging in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. Articles by renowned specialists from all over Europe; interviews with thoracic imaging experts and patient representatives; will comprise this illustrated book, with an additional chapter on research in thoracic imaging provided by American experts. The book will be available for download on the IDoR website in due time before November.
In addition, we have created a second volume to follow last year's popular 'The Story of Radiology' (produced in cooperation with the International Society for the History of Radiology - ISHRAD), which will also be available for download on the IDoR website soon.

Make sure to check out the special booklet on 'The Story of Radiology' which you will find under 'Publications'. A second booklet on oncologic imaging is currently being produced and should be ready next week.
